In 1796, a handful of Jews banded together to form a safe place to worship on the island of St. Thomas. Since then, the Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas has become a major outpost of Judaism in the Caribbean.

The historic synagogue -- designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1997 --  is the oldest synagogue in continuous use under the American flag. It is one of only five in the world with sand on the floor. This is a tribute to the Jews of Spain who, more than 500 years ago during the Inquisition, used sand on the floors of their basements to muffle the sounds of prayer.

The Hebrew Congregation is home to a small, but vibrant, on-island congregation. Many other people fall in love with the history and importance of the Congregation and maintain an ongoing connection long after they visit.  Thousands of visitors come each year and we keep our tours free for all to enjoy and absorb.

You can play a crucial role in keeping this historic congregation not only alive but thriving and poised to help all in times of need.

Your legacy gift, whether through a bequest or some other vehicle, will help maintain and strengthen this rich history for future generations of Jews and the thousands of visitors to our shores each year.
